Recently I got the extreme enjoyment of spending some time with the 2014 Dodge Challenger R/T Shaker edition.
And while some people will accuse it of being little more than a gussied up Challenger R/T…
…I actually believe that this can be the coolest special edition appearance package on the market nowadays.
And the belief is facilitated by the amount of compliments I got on it… so do many other people.
This 2014 Dodge Challenger R/T Shaker for sure is amazing.
Dodge manufactured only 1,000 examples of this special edition package for the 2014 model year and although the special and unique “Shaker” hood was the centerpiece of the package, the Challenger Shaker is much more than simply a Challenger R/T with a cool hood design.
It is true that the Shaker is based on the Challenger R/T, but the Chrysler Group design team was here to add a collection of features inside, outside and under the car to allow this 5.7L Hemi powered Challenger to outperform your “average” R/T.
The 2014 Dodge Challenger R/T Shaker includes exclusive and unique appointments on the inside and a handful of performance features that are making it faster, but also those functions are here to improve the handling. The most noticeable feature is the Shaker hood which, when combined with the stunning Header Orange Paint, will get the attention of everybody.
The 2014 Shaker was introduced with a base price of $38,490 with the addition of the $995 destination fee. Nowadays, you can find it as low as $30,000.
The car that was in my hands was equipped with the standard 6-speed manual transmission, HIDs and the premium UConnect infotainment system with a Harmon Kardon 18 speaker setup and a sunroof. Also, here was a special surprise, this 2014 Challenger Shaker was equipped with the Scat Pack Stage 1 kit that can add unique badging, a cold air intake setup, a performance exhaust system, and an engine calibration that adds 18 horsepower and 18lb-ft of torque….
…but also $2,195 to the final price.
Well, by my opinion, The 2014 Dodge Challenger Shaker is the best looking of the modern Challengers and this Shaker package is the coolest appearance upgrade package offered with any of the modern muscle cars.
I can say that I am a proud Mopar muscle car owner and I grew up loving the look of the original Shaker Challengers that were popular in the early 1970s, so as soon as the modern Shaker package was introduced…
…I instantly fell in love.
And here I am, reviewing it one year later for all those who believe in older models.
For the people not familiar with the Shaker hood setup, the large, prominent hood scoop reaching up from the surface of the hood is in fact attached to the engine and it pokes up through a hole in the hood. It’s carrying the “Shaker” name because when the engine revs and moves slightly in the engine bay (as all engines do), the Shaker scoop also moves with it.
More importantly, the Shaker scoop catches the fresh air coming across the hood and channels it into the cold air intake package that feeds the hungry 5.7L Hemi under the hood.
If you ask me, there isn’t any hood setup that is cooler than the Shaker and that is the reason why Ford has used something similar to the likes of the 2003-2004 Mustang Mach 1 along with some older models.
This hood by itself makes the Challenger Shaker stand out in a crowd…
…but the other details all around the exterior are also here to help to make this package even more unique.
Along with the bright Header Orange paint that Dodge could have easily called “Excuse Me Officer Orange”, the Shaker package includes a set of “Scattered” black stripes that are starting on the hood, running across the roof and down across the trunk lid for a look that you cannot get on any other modern Challenger.
Also, the Shaker package features a body colored grille surround with a Challenger Classic script logo on the black grille mesh, unique 20 inch satin silver aluminum 5-spoke rims with black paint pockets and a gloss black flip up fuel door.
Probably none of the additions after the Shaker hood are bringing that much drama, however, all of them come together with the bold, big, natural lines of the 2014 Challenger to create one amazing looking muscle car.
Practically any place I take the Challenger Shaker on a drive, there were people stopping me to compliment the look and talk about it.
I drive lots of hot new cars and I get lots of people approaching me to talk about said cars, but I have to be honest NOT ANY of them received the positive attention like the 2014 Challenger Shaker.
I have no wish to swoon, but I really love everything about the look of the Challenger Shaker limited edition package…
…and so does everyone else, simply because these all 1,000 units were of stock in just a few days in the 2014.
In short, the exterior design of this unique package is not only a home run – it is a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth in a close game.
When we take into consideration the 2014 Dodge Challenger Shaker interior, it comes with a collection of unique and exclusive appointments that are including high performance heated, power leather seats having SHAKER logo in orange color, plus orange contrasting stitching on the dark leather, a similar flat bottom steering wheel to what is used in the SRT Challenger, also more custom stitching on the doors, after that we have dash and center armrest, black trim pieces throughout the cabin, a unique infotainment startup screen that comes again with the Shaker logo, a bright silver pedal kit and an individually number Shaker badge on the passenger’s side of the dash.
Actually, this is it just an appearance upgrade package and the basic layout resembles to what is found in the Challenger R/T Classic, however, it goes far away in giving the cabin a quite unique look having this beautiful Shaker package.
In relation to spaciousness, that is definitely an area in which the whole set of modern Dodge Challengers shines when compared to the Chevrolet Camaro and the Ford Mustang. Different from the cross town rivals, the Challenger in fact comes with a functional back seat with enough room to seat two normal sized grownups.
Even with the front seats adjusted to comfortably seat two six foot tall adults, there is enough room for two more adults in the back seat.
Well, maybe there is not a lot of leg room, but there is more leg room and more headroom than you get with either the Mustang or the Camaro.
So, If you wish a muscle car that will offer a comfortability to four adults, the Challenger is the only one that can do that and of course the Shaker models are no exception.
There was another aspect of the R/T Shaker I drove, that I really enjoyed…
…the Harmon Kardon 18 speaker sound system that replaces the emergency space tire with a speaker package that is here to offer crisp, clear aftermarket sound system quality for whatever your type of music is.
This is a costly upgrade, but those people who would like the boom of an aftermarket system without worrying about dealing with a seedy stereo shop…
This is an option that you will definitely want to include.
Although the 2014 Challenger Shaker is taking the base from the Challenger R/T, the 5.7L engine plus the 6-speed manual transmission is simply the only features that are the same across the two trimlines.
The Shaker comes with all of the features of the Super Track Pak package, such as a performance tuned steering setup, larger brakes, a stiff sport suspension package, Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires along with a unique three mode stability control system with a full-off mode that can enable you to truly push the big beast to its limits without the computer stepping in to put a stop to the fun.
After all these additions coming with the Shaker we have a nice result:
A Challenger that provides more acute steering control, significantly improved braking distances, improved handling with no much compromise in ride quality and all of the burnouts and drifting that you could ask for many thanks to the full-off mode for the stability control.
Just having the Shaker package doesn’t make the Challenger any faster than the typical R/T in a straight line, but the Super Track Pak allows the Shaker to surpass the R/T in every other area.
On top of that, those performance minded handling features improve the car in every way without making it too stiff or too rough to drive it every day.
There factory performance packages can make the Challenger much stiffer and kill the ride quality, but that is not the case with the Shaker setup, and so you are going to love driving this car, whether you are cruising across the country on a long road trip or blasting down a desolate country road.
The “regular” 2014 Challenger Shaker includes the equivalent 5.7L Hemi as the Challenger R/T, having 375 horsepower and 410lb-ft of torque when equipped up to the 6-speed manual transmission.
But, the Shaker that I was testing was featured with the Scat Pack Stage 1 kit that brings the Mopar exhaust system, a Mopar intake setup plus a unique engine calibration that helps make the most of these features.
The final result is an added 18 horsepower and 18lb-ft of torque that will give a total output of 393 horsepower and 428lb-ft of torque.
Sadly, I wasn’t in a position to do any time racing with the Shaker, but I have driven a lot of modern Challenger R/T’s and I could definitely feel the difference with the Scat Pack Stage 1 kit.
Even better, the Mopar exhaust system has a deep, hearty roar that is much louder than stock under hard throttle…
…but it is still subtle enough to drive every day and what is best of all, there is very little “drone” on the highway.
Also, unlike some of the others performance modifications that include tinkering with the engine computer, the Mopar Scat Pack Stage 1 kit doesn’t impact your warranty, so you get the extra power and the added engine grumble with no need to kill your warranty.
Put another way, I would name the Scat Pack Stage 1 kit a ‘must have’ item for any person with a Challenger R/T – Shaker or not.
Needless to say, after you put all of these features together:
The 5.7L Hemi, the 6-speed manual transmission the Scat Pack Stage 1 kit and the Super Track Pak…
…you will have a 2014 Dodge Challenger that is a total blast to drive.
With a good launch and some prompt shifting, 0-60 times will dip into the mid to high 4 second range and quarter mile times reportedly get well into the 13s.
On the open road, the Shaker comfortably and effortlessly climbs well beyond any posted speed limit in this country with very little throttle input and with a quick downshift and a stomp of the gas pedal.
In other words:
This car will rocket away from almost any stock car that you’ll find regularly.
While still being a big, roomy muscle car with a curb weight over 4,000lbs, the Challenger Shaker will handle tight turns well and longer sweeping highway turns can be executed at very high speeds with confidence.
The Dodge Challenger R/T offers an amazingly fun to drive, and yet the Shaker package combined with the Scat Pack Stage 1 kit can take that fun to even a higher level.
If you want to own a true muscle car without worrying about the big price of the SRT models…
…combine the Shaker package and Scat Pack Stage 1 kit to create a muscle car that will deserve to stand shoulder to shoulder with the great American performance cars of the 1970s.
The Final Word
Yea, the 2014 Dodge Challenger R/T Shaker is not the most powerful or the fastest muscle car on the market today – it is not really the fastest and most powerful Challenger, either – but there is no denying that the limited edition 2014 Shaker package is as vintage-cool as it gets.
The one actual negative aspect to the Challenger R/T Shaker is that Dodge only manufactured 1,000 samples and when the order bank was opened in the 2014, they sold out in less than three business days.
I am pretty convinced that those 1,000 Shaker Challengers were purchased by the dealerships and not actually ordered by the customers…
…but anyway, three days.
Today, however, it will probably be a hard task to find this model in a dealership, but if there is a chance that you could find one it would be a wise choice to snatch it up…
As not only the Shaker is one wicked, old school style muscle car…
But it is also a limited edition model that is sure to be a collectible in the future.
As is the case with all of the Hemi powered Dodge Challengers, the Shaker package features some serious HP for extreme driving fun and with the addition of the Super Track Pak – this Challenger can allow you to blast down the quarter mile or through your local twisty roads with much confidence.
That will be the true of all of the Challenger R/T models and particularly of those that are equipped with the Super Track Pak, but the Shaker setup adds an extra element of classy style to your high performance driving fun.
The good news is that the Shaker hood setup is available with both the Challenger R/T and the new Challenger Scat Pack for this 2015 model year.
Even better, the 2015 Shaker package comes also with the 392 Hemi that offers 485 horsepower and 475lb-ft of torque so in addition to the stunning exterior design of the Shaker package…
…2015 owners will also have a shot to get a bunch more power.
Lastly, any modern Dodge Challenger R/T owner who would like a bit more power and a bit more audible personality should check out the Scat Pack Stage kits, as I was very impressed with the roar and the power increases of Stage 1…
I can only imagine the advantages of Stages 2 and 3.
Best of all, you maintain your factory warranty.
