Тhe famous Italian automaker is working on a brand new and slightly more powerful engines for its new lineup of vehicles that will eventually replace the 159 small sedan. At the moment Alfa Romeo in makes the turbocharged 1.75-liter four-cylinder that’s fitted to the 2015 4C sports car, the most potent engine right now and it rates in at 237 horsepower.
Sources for several media outlets have revealed that the new engines will come in both diesel and gasoline versions and will also feature four-cylinder and V6 machines. The most powerful will reportedly crank up to as much as 480 horsepower. This is mostly because of the twin-turbocharging system and direct fuel injection. Speculations tip that this machine will wear the GTA badge and will likely be reserved for the high-performance version of the Alfa sedan.
The gasoline units will come in 2.0-liter four-cylinder and 2.9-liter V-6 formats. Interestingly enough the first is said to based on the design of the 3.0-liter V-6 used by none other than Maserati. Just like the Maserati engine which peaks at 404 horsepower, the new Alfa engine may also end up being built by Ferrari.
As for the 2.0-liter four, this engine is expected to be the volume unit. It’s referred to as the Global Medium Engine and is being developed to produce between 180 and 330 horsepower. It too will likely benefit from turbocharging and direct-injection technologies to boost output while reducing emissions.
The two new turbocharged diesel engines will consist of 2.2-liter four-cylinder units and 3.0-liter V-6 units.. The four-cylinder diesels should develop between 135 and 210 hp, while the V-6 should offer between 275 and 340 hp. The V6 is said to be a variation of the 3.0-liter V-6 diesel currently fitted in some Jeep and Maserati models.
The powerful engine will be seated under the hood of the new small sedan, but we can surely expect the new engines to appear in several other new Alfa Romeo vehicle that are most likely confirmed and will arrive well before the end of 2018. These will include two compact cars, another variant of the small sedan also we can expect a wagon, two small and mid-size crossovers, a range-topping mid-size sedan, and a new sports car to replace the 4C.
The four-pot turbo petrol will produce between 135kW and 246 kW, and will be available with manual and automatic transmissions as well as rear and all-wheel drive. Тhe engine has a name, yes and it’s dubbed the Global Medium Engine. It will also see service in many other Alfa Romeo and Fiat-Chrysler group models. A 2.2 litre diesel is expected to round out the Alfa midsize sedans engine range, with outputs ranging between 100 kW and 156 kW.
Besides the fact that the new engine is specially reserved for Alfa Romeo’s mid size car, there is also a rumour that the company also is working on a new version of Fiat’s VM Motori-supplied 3.0 litre turbodiesel V6 with up to 250kW. The engine will likely be seen in a future Alfa large sedan and SUV. We are expect to hear more about Alfa Romeo sedan lineup in the near future. But for any further detailed information we’ll have to wait for the official launch that is scheduled for late June next year.
