Maybe crime rates are not that high in Dubai but the police force sure spends a hefty amount of money on their drive park. With the latest acquisition of the BMW i8 they sure want to add a bit more brute force in their law enforcement team.
This purchase follows up on a recent one, a Rolls-Royce Phantom to be exact which will be used by the police force in Abu Dhabi which we guess is a needed assesment in this country. This well equipped police in Dubai in its fleet has a handful of powerful supercars that cost a lot more than some countries have in their vaults.
In The Same Garage With Lamborgini Aventador, Bugatti Veyron and the Ferrari FF
There is the mighty Lamborghini Aventador, Bugatti Veyron, and you will even see the Ferrari FF. But no, they didn’t stop there. In their garage sits the beautiful Aston Martin One-77, as well as the Mercedes-Benz SLS, and the powerful Nissan GT-R and Audi R8.
The Dubai Police Force has a truck full of cars that are or not suitable for police duty, but when you look at their performance statistics, now that’s where you are mind-blown. You would think that they would stop there.
Oh no they didn’t, the police force last year also bought a Mercedes-Benz B63S – 700 Widestar tuned by Brabus. The 700-hp SUV, based on the Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG, debuted at the Dubai Motor Show in November of 2013 prior to joining the fleet, becoming one of the more practical exotic vehicles to join the force.
BMW 5-series does the dirty work
The supercars acquired by the Dubai police are not actually for chasing bad guys, they are mostly for show and tell. Even the sheik knows what should be done when it comes to actual work. There are a couple of expendable BMW 5-series sedans in their garage that do all of the dirty work.
Let’s get back to the BMW i8. It is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that runs on gasoline and produces around 228 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. The i8 also has an additional electric motor up in the front which can produce additional 129 horsepower and around 184 lb-ft of torque.
A Plug-In Hybrid engine
The engine that runs on gasoline actually runs the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox. On the other hand the electric motor powers only the front wheels. We are surprised of yet another electric motor.
This one produces 13 horsepower and 81 lb-ft of torque that exist to give extra help to the rear wheels. Overall, the BMW i8 sums up to around 357 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque.
Of course, being a plug-in hybrid it can be fully charged in just two hours. BMW also claims that the car can go from 0 to 60 in just 4.5-second. It also runs a total of 22 miles on battery and boasts a combined range of 310 miles. We guess that the BMW i8 price is just right, at least in the UAE. It goes around for 635000 AED which converts to $172883.21.
